An MPD officer is off the job for now, charged with simple assault. Eric Fletcher, 43, surrendered to police and was arrested Wednesday, April 18th after a warrant was issued.
Investigators say Fletcher had moved into an apartment at the Country Squire Apartments. They say the victim was visiting another man who held the lease to the apartment.
The victim told police he, the other man, and Fletcher were drinking and socializing. The victim said when he fell asleep, Fletcher began physically assaulting him. He told investigators the other man separated them, but Fletcher assaulted him two more times throughout the early morning hours of April 11th. According to the police affidavit, the victim claims during the last assault, Fletcher threatened to kill him if he told anyone.
Investigators say Fletcher was off-duty at the time, and because no officers were present when the reported assaults occurred, an immediate arrest was not made. They say after a thorough investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Fletcher, and he surrendered.
Fletcher posted a $100 bond and is due in court Friday. He remains off duty for now.
Fletcher has been employed by the Memphis Police Department since January of 2002 and is currently assigned to the Tillman Station.
