MEMPHIS, Tenn (localmemphis.com) - Firework displays across the Mid-South were canceled due to rain, thunder and lightning. But that didn't impact Mud Island's show. Organizers ignited the fireworks early during clearing of the weather.
"It's so beautiful," said Deborah Edinburgh. "When they go off, seeing all the different explosions and the people mingling together, it's wonderful. The kids are excited and also me, as going as I am, I love the look of fireworks."
Deborah Edinburgh was one of hundreds of people who came out for Tuesday's festivities. She was also working at one of the local concession stands selling food.
"On a hot day like today you are going to need a lot of lemonade," she said.
The food and fun was a major hit but the real show stopper was the 20 minute firework display.
"This is the best firework display in Memphis that you'll see," said Mud Island River Park Programming and Event Coordinator Carmen A. Jones. "I don't mind bragging. The fireworks get more and more impressive each year. The firework company always makes it bigger and better. You're not going to see anything better in Memphis."
The show attracted hundreds of people. Many told Local 24 News the show was a success, even with the rain.
"It was the perfect backdrop," said Edinburgh. "To see it go off over the Mississippi, it was truly beautiful."
