Off-Duty MS State Trooper Shot And Killed, Suspect In Custody

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - An off-duty Mississippi State trooper was shot and killed early Sunday morning.

According to investigators, the shooting happened near the Tippah County and Alcorn County line just before 1:00 a.m. Upon arrival, officers found two people had been shot.

The victims have been identified as 32-year-old off duty state trooper Kenneth Joshlin “Josh” Smith and 38-year-old Rickie Dale Vick.

Vick was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition and is expected to be okay.

Smith was pronounced dead on the scene.

With the help of local and federal authorities, the suspect has been identified as 43-year-old Troy Anthony Eaton of Rienzi, MS. He surrendered to law enforcement authorities at around 5:30 a.m.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations is handling this ongoing investigation.
