Online Retail Giant Amazon Ready To Plant Its Flag In Memphis And Shelby County

Local News

Online retail giant Amazon is ready to plant its flag in Memphis and Shelby County. The e-commerce business has applied for a 15-year Jobs PILOT to the Economic Development Growth Engine (EDGE) for Memphis and Shelby County.

The development will be located on 3292 East Holmes Road in Southeast Memphis.

The facility they have in mind will support their North American fulfillment network. According to the EDGE application, “the facility will collect and repackage products for distribution to fulfillment centers across the United States.”

Through the project, Amazon is looking to make a $72.5 million investment and inject 600 new jobs into the economy. Construction on a 615,00 square foot facility would account for $39.6 million of the total investment.

An additional $23.3 million would go to purchasing manufacturing machinery and equipment.

As for the jobs, the average base salary would come out to almost $29,000 annually, excluding benefits. According to EDGE, the project will generate more than $36 million worth of new property taxes for the community.

The first step in getting the PILOT approved will be at the EDGE Board’s October 18 meeting.
