Orange Mound showed off its new Heritage Room Sunday shedding light on the neighborhood’s history and culture.
The room is inside Melrose High School.
The opening program featured an MLK50 presentation on the impact of Dr. King’s assassination on Orange Mound and the Melrose Class of 1968.
The space will serve as a multi-purpose neighborhood space for exhibitions, community conversations, and a storage area for cultural materials.
“If you went to Melrose, then you know what loyalty is. If you were born and raised in Orange Mound, you know what Orange Mound means, because it’s so historic,” said Joann Moore, a 1968 Melrose High School graduate.
The Heritage Room will also mark the starting point for the annual “This is Orange Mound” neighborhood tours starting in July.
