Phone number created for seniors & those with disabilities to get local transportation information

Local News

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Release) – Now older adults and people living with a disability who need reliable transportation can receive reliable support in getting to their destinations with 901RideChoice. Powered by Innovate Memphis, 901RideChoice is a free phone service that provides callers, who may often depend on family or friends for transportation, with information about local ride options to help them regain their independence.

Callers will be asked a few questions to determine the safest, most affordable and accessible ride options so they can make the best decision.  After calling 901RideChoice, they will have the needed information to schedule their own rides to doctor appointments, pharmacy visits, grocery store errands and others. Transportation options include MATAplus (paratransit service offered by the Memphis Area Transit Authority), as well as transportation provided by other community, health care and service agencies.

In addition, caregivers, families, social services agencies and faith-based organizations can also call 901RideChoice to get transportation information for their loved ones, clients and members.

“We are thrilled to launch 901RideChoice to increase access for populations in our city who are most in need of support, such as our older adults and people living with a disability,” said Justin Entzminger, Innovate Memphis Executive Director. “It’s our hope that the information callers receive will connect them with the best option available and help lead to a more independent and healthy quality of life.”

The 901RideChoice free phone service initiative is being funded through MATA with funds made available by the Federal Transportation Administration’s Section 5310: Enhanced Mobility of Seniors and Individuals with Disabilities Program.

“We realize the importance of partnering with other agencies and organizations in an effort to improve public transit that meets the needs of everyone in our community,” said Gary Rosenfeld, Chief Executive Officer for MATA. “Our perspective is to create effective strategies that mirror a cooperative, comprehensive and efficient approach that reflects a true investment in improving transit across the board. A major component of that is to leverage additional assets – such as the 901RideChoice phone service – to provide valuable information that can serve communities which may be the most transit disadvantaged.”

901RideChoice will continue to build community partnerships to provide an additional layer of support for more organizations in the city and vulnerable populations they serve.

“As an organization providing services to seniors and families for over 50 years, we know firsthand that 901RideChoice will be a valuable resource to help people regain their independence,” says Sally Jones Heinz, Metropolitan Interfaith Association (MIFA) president and CEO. “Having access to information to schedule transportation of your own is priceless, and we look forward to offering our clients another layer of support as a partner.”

Additionally, this free phone service will enhance existing services from city services like the Memphis Fire Department. “For the non-emergency patients we serve every day, access to transportation is one of the reasons they call,” says Director Gina Sweat, Memphis Fire Division. “In launching 901RideChoice, more information will be available to these patients to use non-emergency services that best fit their individual needs and will hopefully free up critical MFD resources for emergent responses.”

901RideChoice is available now at (901) 743-3901.
