Police Offer Vacation Home Checks

Local News

As you pack your bags and head out of town for the holidays local law enforcement agencies offer some peace of mind with vacation home checks.

Germantown Police and many other Mid-South agencies will check your home daily to make sure nothing is amiss.

According to GPD, as of today they have 39 active vacation checks. They expect more to roll in as the holidays creep closer.

Germantown residents who will be gone from home for 4 days up to a month are eligible for the service. Officers check homes about twice day until you come back. For safety reasons, they stick to checking empty homes.

“We found doors unlocked. We found people who accidentally left their sprinklers on. One time we found a tree had fallen against a house we were able to notify the homeowner about that,” said Captain Mike Fisher with Germantown Police.

“I think that here in Germantown we are a very safe community, but I don’t think we should take that too lightly,” said Layla Rouse, who uses the vacation check service regularly.

For Rouse, the check offers an extra sense of security.

“That gave us a lot of peace of mind that we know that when we’re gone everything will be watched, and our house will be maintained, and we’ll be notified if anything does happen,” said Rouse.

“We want to be proactive and so if anything, we can do for the citizens to help them feel more secure and to actually go by make sure their property’s secure we want to do that,” said Fisher.

Memphis Police, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department offer vacation checks as well.

In Memphis you can contact your precinct. For Shelby and DeSoto Counties you can reach them through their non-emergency number.
