Protest Take Place At FedEx Forum Friday For Removal Of Confederate Monuments

Local News

A state commission’s decision today to keep Memphis from removing a confederate statue was behind a small demonstration outside FedEx forum tonight.

A group called Take Em Down 901 says it chose the plaza prior to tonight’s Grizzlies game, in part, because of coach David Fizdale’s outspoken support for taking down the statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest.

Demonstrators unfurled a Take Em Down 901 banners across the plaza.

They also staged a brief die-in where they laid down as fans entered the forum.

The demonstration also included a dramatic portrayal of Nathan Bedford Forrest.

“Someone once asked me why the south was fighting the Civil War, and I told them if we’re not fighting to keep slavery, then what the hell are we fighting for.”

By the way Coach Fizdale ended his post-game news conference tonight saying “take ’em down, Memphis. Take ’em down.”
