MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Local 24 News political analyst and commentator Otis Sanford shares his point of view as Rep. Steve Cohen prepares to hit the national spotlight in the latest phase of the impeachment inquiry.
Up until now, members of the Tennessee congressional delegation have had no direct involvement in the impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump. Virtually all of them – in the House and Senate – have been standing on the sidelines mostly making judgmental comments about the proceedings. Republicans dominate the Tennessee delegation by a margin of 9 to 2. And all of them are opposed to impeaching the President, although some such as Senator Marsha Blackburn have been much more vocal in her attacks than others.
But as the impeachment hearings resume Wednesday in the House Judiciary Committee, one Tennessee Congressman will be seen and heard. He is Memphis’ Ninth district Democratic representative Steve Cohen. The seven-term Congressman has been outspoken in his disdain for the President, and was one of the first House members to raise impeachment against Trump – long before the issues with Ukraine came to light. Cohen is an attorney by profession and will likely be a key part of the effort by Democrats this week to lay the groundwork through constitutional scholars for why Trump has indeed committed impeachable offenses.
Expect Cohen to also be aggressive in pushing back against Republicans on the committee who insist there is nothing to see here. Like him or not, this will be Cohen’s biggest moment in the national spotlight since getting elected to Congress. It will be interesting to see how he fares. And that’s my point of view.
