Rev. Jesse Jackson Calls For National Boycott Of Kroger After Mid-South Store Closings

Local News

Growing frustration over the recent closings of several Mid-South Kroger stores is now turning into calls for a national boycott.

Reverend Jesse Jackson called for the boycott Monday while speaking outside the former Kroger location in Orange Mound. The announcement comes after the grocery chain closed three local locations in February, citing a loss of profits.

Jackson says he understands it was a business decision, but adds that he believes Kroger should have sold the stores to anyone interested in keeping a grocery store in the area.

“Kroger wants to maintain the right to leave and then destroy competition,” said Jackson. “That’s mean for them to reduce us to a desert. It’s mean and evil and we intend to fight back.”

Community leaders say they are planning to visit Kroger’s corporate headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the coming weeks to make sure their concerns are heard.
