Shots fired at Wolfchase Galleria draws concerns for shoppers

Local News

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ( The Memphis Police Department responded to a shots fired incident, at the Wolfchase Galleria on Sunday.

A woman who was with her small children said it was the scariest day of her life.

Kimberly Diggs was in Macy’s with her 1-year-old and 7-year-old when police officers approached them with rifles in their hands and told them to leave the mall as quickly as possible.

“They said you need to get out now there’s an active shooter,” said Diggs.

Her husband, who was also with them, tried to help others in the store get out safely. There were no reports of anyone hurt, but Diggs said everyone around her started running when they found out what happened.

“It became a stampede where we saw so many people running with their children,” said Diggs.

In the four years, Wolfchase Galleria has had at least four concerning incidents happen.

In December of 2016, the mall had to beef up security for an increase in fights. Just a year after that, three people were taken to the hospital when a fight outside of the mall escalated into gunfire.

Another incident included a man attacking and exposing himself to a boy.

Diggs said she had never experienced this type of fear and it angered her that someone brought a gun to the mall. She said the people around her were screaming and tried to hide in the clothing racks.

“It just made me angry that somebody would tote a rifle through any place like that it just made me angry,” Diggs said.

When Local 24 News reached out to Wolfchase Galleria for response about whether it would increase security it responded with,  “As this is a police matter, all inquiries should be directed to the Memphis Police Department.”
