MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) — Seniors from Soulsville Charter School are getting ready for their next chapter in life by going to college.
Soulsville Charter has had a 100% college placement rate for the past 8 years. This year was no exception.
Teresa Whitelow started Soulville Charter School when she was in 7th grade. Weeks from now she’ll be leaving the school and graduating with dozens of college options.
Whitelow was accepted into 12 colleges, and she’s not alone.
The front window at Soulsville Charter School is covered in college admission letters for every Soulsville senior.
“My experience here has been great,” said Teresa. “The staff here is very helpful and supportive.”
It’s why Teresa and her mother chose Soulsville Charter. Teachers and students walk through these doors with a commitment to excellence shared during what they call advisory time.
“Twelve students get in one group and we all have one advisor that talks to us, keeps us on track with our grades and what we want to do in life,” said Teresa.
It’s a system that’s proven to work for Soulsville Charter for the last 8 years sending 100% of its graduating classes on to higher education.
“The staff here is just unbelievable dedicated,” says Soulsville Charter spokesman Tim Sampson. “It’s like every single student here is the only student in this school. They’re cared for so much, and the teachers hold them to such high standards and high expectations.”
Its recipe for success includes a tight knit network of alumni, counselors, and parents emailing and texting information to each other to get these students to and through college.
Teresa will announce her college choice on “Decision Day” May 6th along with the rest of her class.
