BARTLETT, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – UPDATE 7/10/2019 – The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says 20-year-old Daven Giles is now charged after they say he tried to run over two deputies in a stolen car Tuesday night.
It happened in the parking lot of the Econo Lodge in the 9800 block of Huff N Puff Road. Investigators say deputies fired shots at Giles, striking the stolen vehicle he was driving. They say Giles led them on a chase that ended when he hit a telephone pole at Yale and Brother Boulevard. They say Giles tried to run but was captured after a short chase.
Giles was taken to the hospital with minor injuries from the crash. The two deputies who fired their weapons have been placed on routine administrative leave.
Giles is charged with several felonies, including two counts of attempted murder.
7/9/2019 – A suspect crashed a stolen car at Brother Boulevard and Yale Road after being chased by Shelby County Sheriff Deputies Tuesday night.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the suspect, who had a weapon, was taken to the hospital after being hurt in the crash.Deputies say the unidentified suspect was located in a stolen vehicle at the Econo Lodge near Canada Road and Interstate 40. When approached by police, he threatened them with a gun and tried to run them over.
“The suspect brandished a weapon and attempted to run over deputies with a vehicle,” said Captain Anthony Buckner with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
“At least one deputies fired shots at the suspect who was able to flee from the parking lot,” Buckner said. “After the crash the suspect did flee ran into a wooded area here at Yale and Brother. But we were able to apprehend the suspect after a period of time.”
The suspect was not hit by the gunfire.
Three sheriff vehicles were rammed or side-swiped. Three cars were also damaged in the pursuit.
Deputies tell Local 24 News they are investigating a couple of other accidents in relation to the pursuit.
No deputies or civilians were not injured in the incident.
The suspect was taken to Regional One Hospital for minor injuries from the crash.
