The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating a fatal shooting involving Shelby County deputies in Northeast Memphis.

It happened about 3:40 p.m. Thursday in the 6100 block of Shelby Oaks Drive.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were serving an arrest warrant for a man at the Garden Tree Hotel. A SCSO spokesperson said while outside the hotel, the suspect fired at deputies and the deputies returned fire.

“We don’t know how long they were looking for him, but they were led to this hotel,” said Sgt. Anthony Buckner. “They had pretty good intelligence that this individual was here. They did encounter him here.”

According to TBI, the Narcotics Unit was attempting to serve an outstanding arrest warrant before the shooting took place.

“What I can say is that this incident occurred outside the hotel,” added Sgt. Buckner. “It does not seem or appear that any guests of the hotel were affected by this incident.”

Memphis police responded to the scene as well as the Memphis Fire Department for first aid. The man who was shot was died at the scene.

Shelby Oaks remains blocked as the investigation continues. The TBI and forensic scientists are still on the scene.

Statement from TBI as of 6:00 p.m. 2/7/2019:

At the request of 30th District Attorney General Amy Weirich, and per the Memorandum of Understanding between her office, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, TBI Special Agents and Forensic Scientists continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding a fatal officer-involved shooting on Thursday afternoon.

Preliminary information indicated the incident occurred at approximately 3:35 in the parking lot of a motel in the 6100 block of Shelby Oaks Drive. Reportedly, deputies from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department Narcotics Unit were attempting to serve an outstanding arrest warrant on a wanted male subject. When the subject saw the deputies approaching in the parking lot, he reportedly fired upon them. At least two deputies returned fire, striking the man, who died at the scene. No law enforcement officers sustained injury during the incident.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation, as TBI Special Agents and Forensic Scientists continue to work to gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence. As in any case, TBI’s investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for her further consideration and review.

As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective department.

Any updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
