Teens Can Apply To Be Part Of Shelby County Mayor’s 2nd Annual Fight Blight Team

Local News

Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell is ready to put teens to work. It’s the second annual “Fight Blight” program in the Bluff city and beyond.

100 young people ages 14 to 24 will be picking up trash along Memphis and Shelby County roadways. Young people ages 14 to 20 will be paid $9 an hour. Supervisors age 21 and older will get $12 an hour.

Last year, the teams removed nearly 7,000 bags of trash weighing more than 100,000 pounds. Plus, the program teaches young people to take pride in litter-free living.

“Idleness is the devil’s workshop is the old saying,” said Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell.

Luttrell sees his Fight Blight Team as a way to reach young people on different levels.

“Young people got out there and committed themselves, made a little money, did a community service, and I think at the end of all of them felt good for it,” said Mayor Luttrell.

For the second year, teens will be raking in money as they pick up trash and clean up Memphis and Shelby County. Teens we talked to last year say it beats the alternative.

“I’d probably just be at the house reading, watching tv,” said Brainard Clark.

“I’d probably just be playing soccer and reading and on my phone all summer,” said Natalie Yearwood.

Teams of teens hit the streets to tackle trash starting in June. Mayor Luttrell says it will keep them busy during the summer, help make Memphis more inviting, and give teens some well-deserved cash in their pockets.

“We’re gonna pay ‘em well, so we want some work out of ‘em,” said Mayor Luttrell.

Luttrell says this program also serves as a reminder to the public to keep it clean.

“It gives us an opportunity to recruit kids, to highlight public service, and also to remind our adults that they could play a huge role by holding that trash and putting it in the proper receptacle,” said Mayor Luttrell.

The “Fight Blight” program will start June 1st and run through July 26th. Teens ages 14 to 24 will work 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
