Tennessee state law declares July 13 Nathan Bedford Forrest Day

Local News

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – July 13 is Nathan Bedford Forrest Day in Tennessee.

Forrest was renowned for his tactics during the Civil War, but he was a slave trader before the conflict and later an early leader of the Ku Klux Klan.

A bust of Forrest is on display on the second floor of the state capitol.

Since 1931, every governor in Tennessee has been required by law to sign a proclamation honoring the controversial Confederate general.
