Tigers-Vols Game Helps Downtown Memphis Businesses

Local News

The Memphis Tigers match-up game against the Tennessee Volunteers brought in thousands of folks for the second highest attended game at the FedEx Forum in Tiger history.

The Tigers fell to the Vols, 102 to 92 in the end.

Although the Tigers lost, downtown businesses won, as crowds flocked to them after the game.

Local businesses like Silky O’Sullivans, which is located just feet away from the FedEx Forum, said big rival games really help their bottom line.

“December is such a deceptive month. The weather is so crazy and a lot of times my staff will come to work, and they’ll leave a little downhearted because folks don’t come out on a cold and rainy Tuesday,” said Jay Wells, the Silky O’Sullivan’s Manager.

Although Saturday was different for Silky O’Sullivan’s Manager Jay Wells, who saw an increase in attendance.

Wells said after the Tigers versus UT game, fans for both teams flocked to his restaurant to enjoy good food and drinks.

“The fact that they are just 50 yards away from our door is absolutely wonderful,” said Wells.

You could hear the excitement inside his restaurant from both University of Tennessee fans, and Tiger fans.

Down the road, workers at Coyote Ugly say they also saw an increase in business.

“Business has been good. We started off slow and after the game it picked up,” says Rashad Lyons, a Coyote Ugly Shift Lead.

Businesses on Beale say game day at the FedEx Forum means their staff will go home with a few extra bucks in their pockets.

“The economic impact is huge for Memphis, for this street, and for us,” said Wells.
