Until local ordinance is passed, Memphis police will issue warnings regarding new cell phone while driving law

Local 24 News has a clarification about the new cell phone law in Tennessee which went into effect July 1.

Monday, a Tennessee Highway Patrol sergeant for our area told Local 24 News the new hands-free driving law can be enforced by city, county, and state law enforcement.

We reached out to Memphis Police multiple times Monday for comment. They got back to us Tuesday night and said Memphis Police can’t yet issue tickets for violating the state law.

A police spokesperson said an ordinance will have to be passed. Until then, officers will issue warning citations.
