Tree falls on home during overnight storms trapping 2 children

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ( — Overnight storms uprooted a large tree that fell on a home leaving two children trapped inside.

High winds and heavy rain moved through the Mid-South Wednesday night into early Thursday morning, leaving behind a string of damage and power outages.

The Memphis International Airport measured 67 mph wind gusts around midnight.

In Whitehaven, Elvis Presley Blvd was partly in the dark. Storms left 30,000 without power.

On the 1000-block of Whitaker Dr., a large tree was uprooted, crashing down on the side of a home. A significant chunk of the roof was missing from the back right-side of the house.

According to the Memphis Fire Department, two children were trapped inside, but, firefighters were able to rescue both.

A 2-year-old was taken to Le Bonheur as a precaution. The child is expected to be okay.

On East Parkway between Union & Central, a large tree is down blocking southbound traffic.

In East Memphis, at least two trees fell onto Quince blocking lanes. A Local 24 News’ crew saw a tree on the corner of a house in that same area.
