Two People Being Questioned Following Shooting Death Of Phil Trenary

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Memphis is mourning the loss of a prominent leader. Greater Memphis Chamber President and CEO Phil Trenary was shot and killed Thursday night in downtown Memphis.

The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the 500 block of South Front Street near G. E. Patterson.

There was a police chase and crash Friday that involved a stolen white truck matching the description of the suspect vehicle in Trenary's shooting.

The chase ended in a crash at McLemore and Mississippi in South Memphis, and two men are being questioned by Memphis Police.

"We cannot confirm right now that the individuals that were taken into custody (are) responsible for the shooting that occurred last night in the 500 block of South Front. We can confirm that the vehicle the suspects were in today that was reported stolen does fit the description of the vehicle that was seen fleeing the scene of the shooting,” said MPD Lt. Karen Rudolph.

Here's what we know:

At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, the Greater Memphis Chamber held its 4-mile "Move It Memphis" race, which started at Loflin Yard, a bar & restaurant not far from the Chamber building in downtown Memphis.

Although Trenary's name was not on the list of people who finished the race, we're told he was at the event.

According to MPD, Trenary was walking down South Front Street, possibly headed to his nearby condo, between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. when he was shot.

The shooting happened across the street from the Farmer's Market in front of high-end apartment buildings.

Authorities say the suspect is a black man with dreadlocks and was seen in a newer-model white 4-door Ford F-150 truck.

Police say the suspect got out of the truck, shot Trenary, then left.

As for a motive, investigators say it's not clear if the shooting was a robbery attempt, a personal vendetta, or a random act of violence.

Authorities are looking at surveillance footage and talking to people in the area.

"We're still pursuing this investigation. We're still pulling all videos. We're talking to anybody who could've seen anything. So, if anybody has any information or saw anything last night during this shooting they need to call Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH,” said Lt. Rudolph.

There were three vehicles involved in the crash Friday, including the suspected white truck. Four people, including the two suspects, were taken to the hospital.
