Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says deaths of mother & infant son in fire in southeast Shelby County are homicides

Local News

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. ( – The Shelby County Sheriff says the deaths of two people, a 32-year-old mother and her 4-month-old son, in a fire Friday morning in southeast Shelby County are now being considered homicides.

It happened about 9:30 a.m. at a home on Bennington Circle near Riverdale. Investigators say 32-year-old Heather Cook and her 4-month-old son were found dead in the home.

Family members have been outside of the house all afternoon. Investigators are still trying to determine how the fire started and possibly by whom.

A neighbor tells Local 24 News he didn’t know the people who lived in the home very well, but he says investigators asked him for his Ring doorbell footage that could give some clues to what happened.

“Three different detectives have asked me for video footage and unfortunately the only footage that I had was when they were coming in the neighborhood around 9:30,” said Jim Searcy.
