A Memphis Police officer is recovering after crashing into another MPD cruiser Tuesday evening. Investigators say the officers were attempting to catch a suspected group of teenage car thieves.
It all started around 5:30 pm at Bass Pro Shop in Downtown Memphis. An off-duty police officer spotted a group of teens acting suspicious, and thought they may be trying to break into cars.
When officers tried to approach, the suspects took off in three different cars in three different directions.
“We don’t have the exact speed but they were high-tailing it out of Bass Pro,” said Memphis Police spokesperson Louis Brownlee.
Officers began to pursue the suspects, and at the intersection of Riverside and Monroe, two police cruisers crashed into each other. One officer was transported to Regional One in non-critical condition.
A short time later, one of the drivers of the three vehicles that fled Bass Pro crashed into a building nearby on Second and Jefferson. “The driver and the passenger of that vehicle were taken into custody,” said Brownlee.
Brownlee said a 17 and a 19-year-old were inside that stolen gray Acura. Local 24 watched as officers recovered guns, bullets, and a bulletproof vest out of the stolen vehicle.
Just a few feet away, police say a black Kia, possibly from the Bass Pro incident crashed into an unrelated vehicle. The occupants in the Kia fled the scene before police could arrive. No injuries were reported.
In addition to the occupants inside the Kia, police are also looking for the occupants of a gray Infiniti.
