MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Three suspects are charged after beating up two men at a parking garage downtown and using racial slurs against one.
Memphis police confirm the incidents happened at the parking garage at 110 Peabody Place September 1st.
“They said a lot of racial things toward me, and they started approaching saying things and then all of a sudden I was attacked,” recalled victim Shane Smith.
According to an affidavit, Christofer Elder, Joshua Matheny, and Michael Matheny punched him while repeatedly yelling racial slurs. One of them saying they already taken one n-word’s shoes and were going to take another one’s.
“They called me n*****, they had taken one n*****’s shoes. They said they were going to take another one’s. They tried to take my stuff from me, but luckily they weren’t able to take anything.”
Smith ended up with a busted lip and walked away with ten stitches.
“I had a laceration on the face. Five stitches on the inside and five on the outside,” he said.
Before Smith was attacked, Memphis Police say the same three men robbed another man, taking tennis shoes worth $200.
One mother who uses the garage frequently says she’ll be using more caution.
“That’s one of the garages we like to park at and you never think about I’m just here to have a good time,” said Jessica Minton. “I’m parking like everything’s going to be safe.”
Smith says he’s blessed to have walked away with only minor injuries.
“Just thankful to be alive, actually. Just thankful, I didn’t know really what was going on or how to comprehend the situation.”
All three suspects are from Mississippi. They’re facing charges of robbery and civil rights intimidation in the second attack.
