The Town of Collierville is giving Washington Street a facelift.
Washington St. is located just east of Main Street and is a natural extension of the Town Square.
Several locally owned small businesses like Mensi’s Dairy Bar, Gifted Hands Beauty Salon, P & T Beauty & Barber Shop, and Wilson’s Furniture are located along Washington Street.
Scott Henninger of the Collierville Planning Division confirmed that proposed improvements on the north side of Washington Street will contribute to the future Washington Square retail area. Two vacant buildings on the same side of the street as Mensi’s Dairy Bar are being renovated to match the style of other buildings on the Square. “They will house restaurants or other forms of retail space that will increase the foot traffic in this vital area of the community,” said Henninger.
Improvements will include repaving and restriping the parking lot, adding street trees and expanding sidewalks to more clearly define pedestrian areas and parking spaces for people. They will help provide for more efficient traffic flow and pedestrian safety.
An outdoor dining area will be built for Mensi’s customers, but otherwise, any change to the dairy bar will be limited to minor cosmetic touch ups, such as repainting. Mensi’s and the Gifted Hands Beauty Salon will remain in business throughout the improvement process.
The Washington Street improvements will likely add curb and gutter, sidewalks, lighting, landscaping, and wayfinding signage as well.
The Washington Square private improvements should wrap up by fall of this year.
