MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – The Memphis Fire Department is welcoming its newest member – Wilson the Therapy Dog!
Wilson is a golden doodle, and his job is to help firefighters and paramedics deal with their daily stress.
Firefighters routinely face death, destruction, and seeing humanity at its worst. So it’s no wonder that firefighters have a 5% higher rate of PTSD and depression than the average person.
“Our firefighters and paramedics see a lot of things that, quite honestly, they have a lot of trouble forgetting,” said MFD Director Gina Sweat. “So his handler, Ms. Amanda, will be taking him with fire stations to hang out with firefighters and make their days a little better.”
MFD says it is one of the few fire departments in the nation to officially add a therapy dog to its staff.
