WEB EXTRA: Drive-In For Big Screen Excitement – A Look At Malco’s Summer Drive-In

Local News

Malco Theatres will celebrate its 104th birthday this month with 33 theater locations still operating to this day.

Malco opened its first Memphis theatre, The Memphian, in 1935, but it was another 15 years before Memphians could have the pleasure of enjoying a movie night without leaving the car.

It was in 1950 that Malco’s Summer Drive-In began operations at 5310 Summer Avenue.

The Summer Drive-In was initially a single screen Drive-In. It expanded to a two screen Drive-In in 1966, which also brought with it a name change to The Summer Twin Drive-In.

Malco Senior VP of Construction David Tashie says he regularly receives calls from upset Drive-In fans worried that the Drive-In has closed. Tashie says any closures are more due to cold weather and limiting showings to weekends as a result.

The Summer Drive-In has had four separate names to date: originally The Summer Drive-In, then Twin, Trio, and Quartet.
