A DeSoto County, Mississippi, high school football team will head south this week to play for the state championship title. Horn Lake High School will play Oak Grove Friday night in Hattisburg. The game will be shown on MeTV at 7:00 p.m.
We talked to the head coach and players, including Nakobe Dean, the number one high school linebacker in the country.
The Horn Lake High School football team says they are ready to rumble.
“It is a big deal. Something we’ve been working towards since we were in middle school,” says Dean.
“Everywhere I go people coming up to me saying it’s the first time in history. Horn Lake alumni coming to me saying it’s great. Putting Horn Lake on the map,” says player Omar Pew.
Horn Lake, Mississippi, High School head football coach, Brad Boyette, says hard work and community support is what drives his team.
“We’ve got a challenge ahead of us, but it’s so exciting seeing what’s going on in our school and what’s going on in our community. The support and people reaching out,” says Boyette.
Named the number one high school linebacker in the country, Nakobe Dean is humble and hard on himself when it comes to accepting praise. Horn Lake won last week’s game, but Dean says, they could’ve and should’ve played better.
“Everybody was talking about how hard it was and how we need to play better in the state championship game. I think I respect that a little bit more than them patting me on the back,” says Dean.
At Horn Lake High, coaches called a team meeting earlier this week to go over plays and pump up the players for what they call an opportunity of a lifetime, playing for the state championship title.
“It’s been crazy you know, us making it here so far,” says Pew.
“It’s been a great season so far. Got one more we gotta take care of,” says Boyette.
“Basically, have fun. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime. Have fun, of course keep everybody focused. And make sure we play hard,” says Dean.
You can watch Horn Lake High take on Oak Grove Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in Hattisburg. Again, the game will be shown on MeTV.
