OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. (localmemphis.com) – Residents in Olive Branch are angry and upset from the recent heavy rain that has left damage to many homes.
One woman was house sitting for her daughter when she said the home filled with rain water.
“The front yard looked like a river that had no where to go,“ Marjorie Stewart said.
She said waking up to flood water rushing into her house at 2am was scary.
“I was absolutely terrified,“ Stewart said. “When you sit here and the water is rushing in your house like Niagara Falls from the front and the car port too, you can’t stop it. You just can’t do anything about it.“
Stewart lives in Lakeland, Tennessee, and said she has never seen flooding as bad as what hit her daughter’s house.
“They say we got 8-10 inches, so that’s a lot of water,“ Stewart said.
Local 24 News asked several neighbors in the area if they had flood insurance and many said no.
“They told us we aren’t in a flood zone,“ Stewart said.
Dayle Woodruff is another resident in the area that said her house has flooded two or three times from heavy rain.
She said she’s seen other neighbors have far worse damage in past years.
“They’ve had to pull out carpets and everything out and throw it away,“ Woodruff said.
Stewart said her daughters house has flooded many times and that they have tried to repeatedly fix any damage.
“This is the fifth time,“ Stewart said. “We had carpet in here the first time and they had to tear all of that up then we had hardwood floor put in and then had to get that taken out and they put in this laminate or whatever this is to take the water.“
Stewart and Woodruff said they are hoping the city of Olive Branch will help their neighborhood for future flooding.
