MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - A 12-year-old girl has died after being shot Tuesday in Frayser. Memphis police said it happened in the 3100 block of Madewell at 8:00 a.m.
Local 24 witnessed an extremely emotional scene by the family and loved ones after that shooting. The girl later died in what police are describing now as an accidental shooting.
The shooting happened in the Greenbriar Apartment complex near Highway 51 and Whitney.
Police said the 12-year-old girl was inside her parent's vehicle when the shooting happened, and authorities said it appears a gun was left unsecured before the shooting.
According to neighbors and the child’s godmother, the family dropped off the 12-year-old to go to the Neighborhood Christian Center for summer camp. Neighbors said there was some kind of tussle when the gun went off. The girl was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, where she died from her injuries.
Memphis police are calling this an accidental shooting as the investigation continues.
The city is reminding everyone that free gun locks are available at every Memphis police precinct and at just about every police department and sheriff’s office across the Mid-South.
