MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – School has started for Shelby County Schools’ students.

Schools across the SCS District welcome back students from the summer break in a special way.

At Delano Optional Elementary, in Frayser, teachers lined the walkway holding signs and cheering with pom poms as each child walked into the school for the first day.

Principal Shadonica Scruggs said it was important to make the students excited for the first day to ensure a successful start.

“We want them to feel great about coming to school on the year. We want them to be anxiously anticipating all of the great things that are going to be coming,” Scruggs said.

With the start of the new school year comes the start of new district-wide initiatives. This year, schools are promoting a third grade literacy program and an African-American Male Empowerment initiative.

At Delano, reading is at the forefront of their focus. Outside of each classroom is decorated and book themed.

Scruggs said that first day excitement will carry over into ensuring their students can improve their reading abilities this school year.
