The last Wednesday in March is Manatee Appreciation Day!
These gentle giants, also called “Sea Cows” are relatives of the elephant. Fun Fact: Hundreds of years ago, sailors thought they were mermaids!
Manatees live in warm Florida waters during the winter and migrate north and west during summer months.
With no natural enemies, they can live to be about 60-years-old, but they are often harmed and killed by collisions with boats.
If you’re looking for a way to celebrate Manatee Day, consider donating to a Manatee Conservation Program.
