UPDATE 5/25/2019 6:15 p.m.: It’s official! Memphis is now the world record holder for the longest picnic table – certified by Guinness World Records!
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – If you’ve ever wanted to be a part of breaking a Guinness World Record, then the Celebrate Memphis event at Tom Lee Park is where you need to be this Saturday.
A new world record for longest picnic table was just set in March in Paris, France.
The picnic table for the Memphis In May record will need to run 1,334 feet in length in order to break the French group’s record.
Memphis in May Vice President of Marketing Robert Griffin says it’s not just a long table that is needed to break the record.
“We’ll need more than 1,000 people to come take a seat and picnic at the table in order to qualify, and we’ll notify people around 5:30 to please go take a seat at the table, it’s time to set that world record,” says Griffin.
The Celebrate Memphis event will be a culmination of a month-long celebration of the city’s Bicentennial anniversary.
The event is free to attend and will kick off at 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
Blankets, lawn chairs and outside food, beverages and coolers are permitted for the event.
