MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Some companies accused of wrongdoing or misleading customers reach settlements in class action lawsuits, but many people don’t claim the money they are entitled to.
How many times have you received a postcard in the mail that you might be entitled to money as part of a settlement with a company that you do business with, only to toss it in the trash?
Consumer advocates say every year, Americans, like you and me, throw millions of dollars down the toilet.
Settlements have been in the news recently, after Equifax agreed to settlement terms, following the massive data breach that exposed the personal information of nearly 150 million people. The settlement includes up to $425 million to help people affected by the data breach, according to the Federal Trade Commission.
The settlement allowed people to claim either $125 or 10 years of free credit monitoring. The claims for money were overwhelming, according to the Federal Trade Commission.
But there are many settlements with companies, at least a dozen, right now, where people are either unaware of their rights to claiming settlement money or may not be familiar with filing a claim.
There are websites out there to help you.
Among the biggest companies that have settlement claims available include Massage Envy, Gap, Coca-Cola, New York and Company, Huawei Devices (Nexus), Ford, Google, and Sirius XM.
Consumer Action is a non-profit who tracks consumer issues and causes, and features a database of some of the largest class-action lawsuits.
ClassAction.org is another site online that keeps a blog, database and important details about claims.
These online resources can help you find out where to find lawsuits that could affect you, important deadlines, and how to file a claim, so you do not lose money you are entitled to.
