WEB EXTRA: Thousands laid off in Shelby County in the first half of 2019

Shelby County lost more than 2,000 jobs in the first half of 2019.

This is according to WARN Act data Local 24 News obtained from Tennessee’s Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

“The data includes all WARN notices submitted to the state by companies following the law,” said Chris Cannon, a spokesperson for the department.

WARN, the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, is a federal law, that according to the Tennessee Department of Workforce Development, protects workers, their families, and communities by requiring employers to provide notice 60 days in advance of plant closings, mass layoffs and/or sale of a business.

Based on state law, companies are required to notify the Department of Workforce Development, which triggers a WARN notice requirement, if a company has 50 or more full-time employees laid off if they constitute one-third or more of the full-time employees at the site, or 500 or more full-time employees.

From January 1 to June 30, data obtained by Local 24 News showed there were more than 2,700 announced layoffs in Shelby county, more than other county in the state.

There are many resources available for the thousands of laid-off workers. The Local 24 Consumer Alert team learned Shelby County has the most American Job Centers of any county in the state.

“The county has three comprehensive AJC locations that provide a long list of services; from job search assistance, resume writing, interview prep, assistance finding job training for a new career, a computer resource room, and many other services,” said Cannon.

Cannon also said when mass layoffs occur, the state and its local workforce development partners hold Rapid Response Team meetings at many employers experiencing a mass layoff to assist job seekers on-the-spot.

“The team meets with impacted employees to review the services available to them and where they need to go to receive those services,” said Cannon.

The state’s Workforce Development website, Jobs4TN.gov, brings together unemployment and workforce services to help job seekers with unemployment benefit, and their job search while receiving benefits.
