MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Tiger Lane was packed Thursday morning with hundreds of kids from all 25 Memphis area community centers. They were participating in the Ultimate Multicultural Game Day sponsored by the City of Memphis and the Division of Parks and Neighborhoods.
The kids had a two-week crash course in learning about the cultures of Mexico, South Africa, and China, which culminated in Thursday’s celebration showcasing the food, culture, dance, and history of these countries.
Youth and Family Services Administrator Tiffany McCollins said the ultimate goal was to bring all of the community centers together in one location to showcase what the kids have learned over the summer.
“It gives them a positive outlook and perspective on fun. We sent them home for the end of the summer with a bang,” says McCollins.
McCollins added that the event was entirely free thanks to Mayor Strickland.
“The mayor wanted everything that dealt with kids and youth today, Player Park and the community centers, so we were innovative and creative in finding a way to bring them all together,” says McCollins.
