SEC Play Brings Fletcher Out of Hitting Slump

Dominic Fletcher finished his first year of college baseball hitting .291, which was 5th on a team that had the 3rd best batting average in the conference. Many expected Fletcher to pick up where he left off and be one of the best hitters for the 2018 Razorback baseball team.

But during the first 17 games of the season, Fletcher struggled at the plate, hitting just .190. In the 25 games since SEC play started, Fletcher is hitting .370 and has raised his season batting average to .297. Fletcher has also lowered his strikeout rate from once in every four at-bats to once in every seven at-bats. The Cypress, Calif. native says he didn’t reinvent the wheel in order to get back on track.

“Didn’t really change anything,” said Fletcher. “Just a little more relaxed at the plate, sticking with my approach that I’ve always had and just not trying to do too much.”

Playing a position that has seen the likes of Andrew Benintendi, Brett Eibner and Craig Gentry to name a few, head coach Dave Van Horn puts Fletcher among the best because of what he can do on defense.

“I think he’s as good as any center fielder we’ve ever had,” said DVH. “And I’ve said that a couple times because I mean he’s saved two or three games already this year, just with his glove. He’s not the fastest center fielder I’ve ever had, but he’s probably the best I’ve ever had of not misjudging a ball off the bat or getting just a little bit of a half-step jump on it before the ball’s even off the bat. He reads the pitch in the zone and the swing and he’s moving.”

Fletcher credits his ability to see the play develop to his training in California.

“I had a coach in high school that I would work with every day,” said Fletcher. ” Outfield guy, hitting guy and that kinda came from him. So big credit to Stan Grebeck.”

Fletcher and the #7 Razorbacks host Alabama this weekend for a three game series, starting Friday at 6:30pm.
