MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – This week will be filled with anticipation, expectation and – win or lose – celebration – all revolving around this season’s remarkable University of Memphis football team.
For the first time ever, the Tigers will be hosting the American Athletic Conference championship game at the Liberty Bowl.
The opponent will be a familiar one – the Cincinnati Bearcats, a team the Tigers defeated Friday to win the conference’s west division title – and earn the right to host the championship.
The Tigers, at 11 and 1, already have the winningest regular season in school history. And a win Saturday will put U of M in the Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day.
With so much at stake, you’d think tension and anxiety would be noticeable everywhere. But I am sensing anything but. This team has totally captured the imagination of Memphians and has turned what is a basketball town into a college football juggernaut.
Throughout the week, businesses will be cashing in on Tiger pride. Sports talk shows will be breaking down the game all day, every day. And Tigers fans from 8 to 80 will be getting pumped up for this unprecedented sporting event. The fact that Memphis will be on national television for second straight week, means positive exposure to the rest of the country that is impossible to buy.
It all adds up to a glorious week for a well deserving football team. And that’s my point of view. I’m Otis Sanford, for Local 24 News.
