MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Memphis fans poured out of the Liberty Bowl Friday night excited and ecstatic as the Tigers clinched several program firsts with a 34-24 win against Cincinnati.
Constant roars and chants of “T-I-G-E-R-S… TIGERS” could be heard by the Liberty Bowl fountain, as a crowd of more than 36,000 walked out into the night feeling joy and jubilation.
By winning Friday, Memphis will host its first AAC Championship game next Saturday.
The Tigers also clinched the team’s first 11-win season.
Longtime Memphis football fans told Local 24 News it’s a proud accomplishment after many lean years over previous decades.
Other fans are now looking ahead to a likely berth in the Cotton Bowl next month, should Memphis win the AAC championship.
That would be the program’s most prestigious bowl appearance in program history.
Fans now hope the Liberty Bowl will be packed next Saturday, again against Cincinnati in the AAC Championship, a game you can watch on Local 24.
