MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – The introduction of Laird Veatch as Memphis athletic director Tuesday afternoon fired up decades-long Tigers fans who’ve seen their share of athletic directors come and go.
The hire brought a strong early reaction from Memphis supporters, who said Veatch brings the perfect mix of experience, charisma, and competitiveness to succeed for years to come.
“He just seems like the logical guy to step in and keep the momentum going,” Don Hudson said.
“He’s a complete package,” Bob Byrd added.
Byrd admired Veatch’s 25 years in athletics, with a background as a deputy athletic director, along with other roles overseeing fundraising and multimedia rights.
“If you thought of every box you’d want to check, this fellow has every box checked in terms of experience,” Byrd said.
University of Memphis President Dr. David Rudd admitted it didn’t take long to zero in on Veatch.
“I can tell you with absolutely no hesitation that Laird is the right choice,” Dr. Rudd said.
Byrd is confident Veatch at the helm will not only maintain the momentum of the football and men’s basketball programs, but also use that success to trickle down to the more than a dozen other sports, such as baseball and softball.
“Success breeds success across the board,” Byrd said.
Byrd believe Veatch will serve Memphis well off the field and off the court by engaging the community and bringing on new supporters.
“An AD who is gracious and engaging within the community, a person who wants to and attract new sources of support,” Byrd said.
