West Memphis Animal Shelter takes in dozens more animals just a week after rescuing 70 dogs

“I’m worried about the crew… this workload is not sustainable…” said a post about the latest rescue on social media.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The West Memphis Animal Shelter is dealing with dozens more animals, just a week after rescuing 70 dogs from another home.

In a post to Facebook, the folks at the West Memphis Animal Shelter said they rescued 31 dogs, several cats and kittens, and a rabbit from a West Memphis home on May 21, 2024.

“I’m worried about the crew… this workload is not sustainable…” said the post.

These latest animals were rescued just a week after the shelter took in 70 dogs from a home in Hughes, Arkansas, on May 14. Three children were also found living in the home and taken into protective custody. Three people were charged.

Before the West Memphis Animal Shelter rescued those 70 dogs, they said they were nearly at double capacity.

"They're tense of course, but no aggression, just very fearful. They've lacked some human socialization, but they're coming around so fast," said Kerry Facello at the West Memphis Animal Shelter.
