Thousands of people are expected to make their way to Arkabutla Lake for Memorial Day weekend

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers say three out of their four campgrounds are near capacity at Arkabutla Lake in Hernando, Mississippi ahead of this holiday weekend.

COLDWATER, Miss — Memorial Day weekend has arrived. It's that time of the year for families to get ready for some holiday fun, and not everyone has to travel far to enjoy time away.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Park Ranger Chris Gurner said they've been preparing for thousands of people to make their way to Arkabutla Lake in Hernando, MS.

According to Gurner, three out of their four campgrounds are nearly full.

"We do have some availability at some of our campgrounds still that are at or near capacity," he said.

Gurner said the number of people coming to the lake might drop off due to low lake levels. He said they currently are working to make repairs.

Wade Mciver and his family decided to make Arkabutla Lake their getaway location this holiday weekend. He said they only live 15 minutes away.

"It's better than going on a long real extensive trip," he said.

Mciver said the low lake levels for him is not bad news; in fact, it's the complete opposite.

"I think the lakes are going to be shut down for a while, which is kind of good because the traffic isn't as bad here and it isn't as crowded on a holiday weekend," Mciver said. "So it works out pretty good."

Gurner said they have multiple outdoor activities for people of all ages. He reminded lake goers of safety being a top priority.

"We promote boating safety, water safety, and we want to make sure that our folks that come to visit our lakes are doing those things that will keep them safe," Gurner said.
