Bond set at $500,000 for woman charged with murder of man in Orange Mound

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Bond has been set at $500,000 for a woman charged after police officers found a man dead Monday morning in Orange Mound within the Cherokee Park area.

Kenyetta Hayes, 26, has been charged with first-degree murder in perpetration of a robbery. Bond was set at $500,000 during a hearing on May 10, 2024.

The Memphis Police Department responded to a man down call May 6 just before 8 a.m. in the 2900 block of Filmore Avenue. There, officers found a man dead. 

MPD later released video of a woman as a person of interest. According to an affidavit, MPD then said they received a tip from the family of the suspect, identified as Hayes, who came to police. 

Hayes told investigators she was at a gas station on Lamar Avenue when a man requested sexual activity in exchange for $60, the affidavit stated. Hayes said she did not intend to comply, but went to the park with the man, planning to rob him.

Hayes said she then shot him, took the money and ran away, later spending some of the $60 on hot wing combos, the affidavit said.

Officers arrived and located a male victim who had been shot and was unresponsive. He was pronounced deceased on the scene. Video in the area captured a person of interest in this homicide. Investigators are seeking the identity of the Black female in the attached video and the pictures in the comments. No arrest has been made. This is an ongoing investigation.
