Pastor injured in front of South Memphis church during shooting as Memphis Police search for suspects

Police said the victim was shot after he came out of the church as two suspects were stealing a 2019 silver Chevrolet Corvette.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A shooting took place in front of the New Zionfield Baptist Church on Sunday morning, according to Memphis Police, and the church later identified the man shot as Pastor Clemmie Livingston Jr. through social media.

In a Facebook post Sunday night, New Zionfield asked people to keep Livingston in their prayers.

Memphis Police Department (MPD) officers said they responded shortly after 9 a.m. to 1865 Rile Street on Feb. 25. One man was found to be a victim and transported to Regional One Health in critical condition, according to Memphis Police. 

The suspects were two men wearing hoodies, according to MPD.

Police encourage anyone with additional information related to this incident to call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-2274 (CASH) with tips.

Police said, specifically, the victim was shot after he came out of the church as the suspects were stealing a 2019 silver Chevrolet Corvette. 

As the suspects drove away, they fired shots that hit the victim, according to MPD. A second person returned fire to the suspects once they opened fire, according to MPD. 

MPD said that the victim was in stable condition as of press time Sunday night. The car has not been recovered, according to MPD.

This remains an ongoing investigation, they said.
