MBI investigating after DeSoto County deputy shoots, kills suspect who fatally shot police dog after chase

The investigation closed northbound lanes on Highway 61 from Interstate 69 to Star Landing Road.

DESOTO COUNTY, Miss — The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) said they are investigating a shooting in DeSoto County after a DeSoto County Sheriff's Deputy shot and killed a suspect who fatally shot a police K-9 after a car chase.

The MBI said the shooting happened near U.S. 61, South of MS 3 in Lake Cormorant, Mississippi, early Wednesday afternoon on Feb. 21.

Deputies with the sheriff’s department were involved in a car chase when the MBI said deputies performed a PIT maneuver on the suspect's car, which then came to a stop.

The MBI said the person then shot a police K-9 when the dog was released after the car came to a stop. That's when MBI said the deputies returned fire, shooting and killing the person. The deputies involved did not receive any serious physical injuries.

The K-9, named Luca, received serious injuries and was treated at a nearby veterinary hospital, MBI said. The DeSoto County Sheriff's Department confirmed the dog later died.

MBI's investigation closed northbound lanes on Highway 61 from Interstate 69 to Star Landing Road, where the shooting happened nearby.

MBI said they will share further information with the Mississippi attorney general's office once their investigation is complete.

Today, we mourn the loss of Luca, a K-9 with the DeSoto County Sheriff's Department, who was killed in the line of duty...
