1 year later, Mid-South family searches for answers after woman murdered in front of her kids

Vanity Macklin was shot and killed October 17, 2022. Her family continues asking the community for help in 2023.

MARION, Arkansas — The search continues one year after a Mid-South mother was shot and killed in front of her kids.

Vanity Macklin was shot while driving in Memphis on Mill Branch Rd. and East Raines, and police still haven’t found the person responsible.

Macklin’s mother, Vanessa Terry, and her sons Trenton and Trestian are still looking for answers. Terry was one of the first to get a phone call.

“So, when I answered I could hear it in his voice – frantic,” Terry said.

“Granny, Granny! Get here now! My mom just got shot!” are the words one of Macklin’s sons said over the phone.

Macklin was killed while driving her then-10- and 12-year-old sons. She took some of her last few breaths with them by her side.

“She would give you the shirt off her back. Her boys were her everything,” Terry said.

Macklin was originally from Southaven, Mississippi, and her family buried her at the Marion Memorial Cemetery in Marion, Arkansas. A balloon release Tuesday night honored the mother, daughter, sister and friend.

“It’s been 365 days, but it feels like yesterday,” Terry said.

The Memphis Police Department is seeking any clues on the person who shot and killed Vanity while driving. The reward for information has been raised to $10,000. Please contact CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH with any information you have on the case.
