Dollar General employee will not be charged for shooting, killing robbery suspect, says D.A.

Memphis Police said the attempted robbery happened around 10:30 a.m. Nov. 28, and someone who saw the crime happen started shooting at the robbers.

MEMPHIS, Tenn — The Shelby County District Attorney General's Office said no charges would be filed against a Dollar General employee who shot and killed a robbery suspect in late November.

Memphis Police said their officers responded to the armed robbery at the store in the 6700 block of Winchester Road in Hickory Hill around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023.

The D.A. said Robert Canada and a second man had gone in and approached the clerk at gunpoint. They said another employee on duty saw what was happening and shot Canada in the back. He died from his injuries.

MPD investigators said at the time they took one suspect who ran away in custody later.

The D.A. said the robbery and shooting were caught on video, and they determined the shooting was justified, "as he was defending himself and others."

The D.A. said the man who fired does not have a criminal record. They said Canada had five prior felonies, including carjacking and aggravated robbery.
