A Kansas nurse from Salina is using her skills to travel to Nebraska for the next six months to help those affected by the floods.

“I think God put me on this earth to help people,” Rebecca Pauley said.

On the weekdays, you can find registered nurse Pauley taking care of patients in Salina.

But last weekend, she was was helping Nebraskans in times of devastation.

“Some of those towns were completely under water,” she said. “We would see them step out of the vehicle with one bag and maybe one animal. You know they were just in tears, they didn’t know where to go.”

But she said she’s pushing emotions aside to help deliver medication and educate victims.

“With the flood is the mold,” she said. “When people go back into their homes, they might not always know they need to wear a mask and going to need a tetanus shot.”

Pauley said she will be traveling to Nebraska with other nurses and volunteers from Salina every weekend for the next six months.

She said she hopes to use her skills for something bigger than herself.

“It tugs at your heart, but you treat all theses families and kids as if they were your own,” she said. “The biggest help would be more volunteers out there.”
