Babies at Saint Francis Hospital Go Red for Heart Month

Heart Month in February is aimed at raising awareness of congenital heart defects.

MEMPHIS, Tenn — Memphis area hospitals are kicking off Heart Month for February, raising awareness of congenital heart defects.

Friday was "Go Red Day" at Saint Francis Hospital-Memphis. The babies were dressed up in red as part of the awareness campaign.

“Being that heart disease is the number one killer n women, we want to bring awareness to women with heart disease, especially maternal mortality, because that can be very devastating,” said Dr. Katosha Muse with Saint Francis. “If we have women who are suffering with heart disease, then we want to make sure we give those babies a fighting chance."

Doctors said nationwide, 40,000 babies are born with heart defects each year. That is one in every 100 babies born in the U.S.
