May 4 is international day of the Firefighter.

An institute has renewed a call for cancer screenings in firefighters.

Research shows cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths for firefighters in America. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is now recruiting firefighters to join the National Firefighter Registry (NFR) for Cancer to promote better understanding of firefighting and cancer correlations.

U.S. fire departments that enroll 50% or over 300 of their active firefighters in NFR will be acknowledged as a Gold Helmet Department by NIOSH. This accolade gives departments a certificate, web badge, and social media posts to share.

The goal of NFR is to understand and reduce the risk of cancer among firefighters.

NIOSH runs as part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
