A luxury town center may be coming to Germantown. The proposed $200 million development would be one of the largest projects in the Memphis area in years.
Dubbed Germantown Town Center, it would be built behind Iberia bank at the corner of Poplar and West Street, just west of Saddle Creek.
People are pumped about it. Germantown officials and residents tell Local 24 this type of town center is exactly what Germantown needs.
Germantown city administrator Patrick Lawton says it’s a smart business decision.
“For a project of this magnitude to come along, they don’t happen every day. Stability in our tax base. Pushing that burden more to the office and retail side and less on our roof tops,” said Lawton.
Carter development out of Germantown is hoping to transform 32 acres of land to include upscale retail, 300 unit luxury apartments, office space, a 130-room hotel, and movie theater.
Two parking decks, a dog park, and pond are also in the mix.
“If you come into this new $200 million private investment project, you’ll be able to park your car and feel safe walking around the entire complex,” said Lawton.
The people of Germantown are excited, they welcome growth.
Summer Thetford of Germantown said, “Germantown is already booming so I’m sure it would bring in a lot more business and people and more activities and money you know positive things.”
“It’s gonna bring some more money in. A lot of money,” said Helen Thomas of Lamar, MS.
Charlotte Davis of Germantown said, “We’ll get a lot more people out here, won’t we?”
There are many more steps to be taken before the deal is done. The plan goes before the Germantown Planning Commission, Smart Code Review Committee March 22nd. Then the full Planning Commission April 4th.
